Rotary Club of Ithaca Inducts Dunn as New PresidentGeoff Dunn, the community preparedness coordinator for the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response, became the new president of the Rotary Club of Ithaca on July 1. Dunn, who joined Rotary in 2014, will lead the service club through June of 2021. A Dryden resident, Dunn has worked for Tompkins County since 2012, following a 30-year career in broadcast journalism in Oswego, Syracuse, Albany and Ithaca. Dunn said the Rotary Club has continued its service to the community during the coronavirus pandemic by launching several new programs, including the Tastes of Gorges Supper Club that has encouraged residents to patronize locally owned restaurants. Rotary members also led a community-wide cleanup in June and have continued to help the Salvation Army collect food and distribute meals. |

Rotarian of the Year 2020At our June 17, 2020 meeting, out-going Club President Frank Towner took part in the annual presidential tradition of selecting this year's Rotarian of the Year. He shared with us the thought process and many vital questions he needed to ask himself before arriving on his choice for this important honor - Linda Brisson. His personal message detailing that process follows: Given the responsibility to choose the Rotarian of the year is no small feat. So many friends, fellow believers and inspired workers. Together, working tirelessly to improve life locally and around the world. Phew... what an awesome thought. Who do you identify as the person of this club to receive this award. Even though it is chosen by the President I believe it is an award that should be recognized by all the club members as deserving. |

Rotary Cares - Quarterly UpdateLet’s admit that the impact of COVID 19 caught us a bit by surprise. That at first we thought we might be able to manage to function as a service club with simple adaptations. Then reality struck, and we went in to social isolation. We only cancelled two weekly meetings, though! We started meeting on ZOOM at the beginning of April. By mid April, we had a Pandemic Response ad hoc committee in place, tasked with creating initiatives in response to the consequences of living in a world wracked by virus. This is what amounts to a quarterly review of what we’ve done in these past three months. |

Host Families Needed for Rotary Youth ExchangeOUR CLUB is in dire need of volunteers from the community to serve as host families for our incoming Rotary Youth Exchange students. Without the guarantee of host families for this year and in the future, our club's Youth Exchange program is in very real danger of being eliminated. This would put an end to a long history of Ithaca City School District students having the opportunity to not only learn from exposure to other cultures, but also to introduce our very unique Ithaca sensibilities to places all over the world. The commitment for being a host family is approximately 3.5 months. You would not house the student for the entire school year. Contact Mike Billing or Jo Ellen Hedlund if you're interested in hosting, know a family who is, or would like more information on helping our Youth Exchange team. |
