Need Wheels?  Hitch Up With Ithaca Car Share.
Executive Director of Ithaca Car Share.  Jennifer  Dotson told us of the amazing success, so far, of this new program which gives 24/7 access to a fleet of cars and trucks for those people who don't need a car regularly.  It is a membership organization, and membership gives you a key fob which will unlock the car you have reserved in advance, after which you can use the car for whatever you need and return it to the same parking space (of which there are several around town).  Some interesting facts:  The average car spends 95% of its time parked.  It costs an average of $8,000 a year to own, maintain, insure and fuel a car; however much (or little) it is used.  This (car-sharing) is a growing movement throughout the country and represents a shift in thinking which benefits the individual pocketbook as well as the environment.  The local group has a membership plan for those who use a car fairly regularly as well as a plan for the person who only needs a car occasionally.  They are now working on a business plan, as well.  At the conclusion of Jennifer's talk, she opened the floor to questions, of which there were many very good ones.
