LAST WEEK’S PRESENTATION

Laura Vineyard, Executive Director, Center for Community Transportation (CCT)

Geoff Dunn; photo Mike BrownGeoff Dunn introduced our speaker, Laura Vineyard (she/they), who comes with a strong background in community organizing, nonprofit leadership, and entrepreneurship.  She joined the CCT after five years as Executive Director of Body Positive Fitness Alliance, an education and advocacy organization striving to make the fitness industry more accessible and inclusive to all people.

Laura Vineyard; photo Mike BrownCCT envisions a community where travel by shared and active transportation is healthy, safe, affordable, and convenient for all.  CCT’s mission-focused services and activities include Ithaca Carshare, Bike Walk Tompkins, and Ithaca Bikeshare, emphasizing social equity and environmental sustainability in this era of new transportation options and emerging mobility trends.  All programs are app-based.

Ithaca Carshare offers personal car access that is affordable, convenient, and friendly.  There are 19 cars in the fleet.  Pickup and return happen at the same location, and individuals can engage in an annual or monthly membership, also paying a mileage fee.  Individuals can book up to 10 days at a time.  Each car in the fleet removes approximately 15 cars from circulation in the community, benefiting the environment.  Varna should get a Carshare at the end of May, and the vehicle is named “Vanna the Varna Van.”

Ithaca Bikeshare offers dockless and electric bicycles that are very quick and easy to use.  The bikes allow individuals to connect with the community due to their accessibility.

Bike Walk Tompkins offers walks that are safe and accessible.  CCT can refurbish donated bikes for a reasonable fee.  They are working to expand volume and locations.

Question:  Is CCT looking for multi-mobility hubs?  Candidates are being explored, like bus stops.  Looking to bring all modes of transportation together and they have a research grant in the process.
Question:  Why are bikes often found in unusual spots with their headlights left on?  Ithaca does not have many bike racks.  The light is often a signal being sent to the system that the bike needs to be checked over.
Question:  Where can bikes be donated for refurbishing?  803 Cascadilla St., at the back entrance.
Question:  How many bikes are in the Bikeshare fleet?  Around 230.
Question:  Does CCT collaborate with Ithaca College or Cornell for transportation support of students?  CCT is in regular communication with Ithaca College, and a partnership is in the works to offer free membership to students.  A relationship with Cornell is in the works.
Question:  From where does the majority of funding come?  CCT has a diverse portfolio of individual donors, sponsorships, and city/town/state funding.  Federal funding is limited.
Question:  Are there steps being taken for the safety issue on the Cornell campus in regard to bike safety being enforced?  There is a strong focus on education around bike safety that is ongoing.
Question:  What happens when there is an injury?  Jeff Goodmark, Director of Bikeshare, will follow-up as needed.
Question:  What is the screening process for Carshare?  Individuals must be 18 years old and have had a clean driving record for the past two years and must carry insurance.
Question:  All of the cars are named; can you talk about this process?  Many in the fleet were named after “famous Ithacans.”  Nowadays the staff votes on a name when a new vehicle is acquired.  Recently a pickup truck was added and was named Irene.  All vehicle names are visible on the side.

HAPPY DOLLARS

  • Angela Sullivan: making a Community Foundation donation.  Most know of her very public spill on Route 13, and Angela was grateful for so many people who stopped to help and check in; it restored her faith in humanity.
  • Mike Katz: happy to complete the Five Borough Bike Ride in NYC last Sunday with his wife (40 miles)—one and done!
  • Jean McPheeters: thank you for the extra support given with the picnic on May 5th; also, the car in Varna should be named “Nirvarna.”  (Your newsletter editor agrees wholeheartedly!)
  • Bob Gravani: ten Rotarians helped with the highway cleanup, and Jim Johnston agreed to be co-chair for the fall cleanup.  Bob also completed the Five Borough Bike Ride in the City.
  • Dale Flinn: visited Gene Erickson at Kendall, and he’s doing well.  Dale spent 10 days on the road driving across the country and visiting planes, trains, and automobiles.  Had a special moment returning a valuable memory to a friend.
  • Loralyn Light: felt good to be back in Ithaca after three months away.  She made a cake for Beverly Baker and shared it with her on her birthday.  Loralyn spoke to Siu-ling on the way to Rotary; Siu-ling’s daughter in California has cancer again after seven years, so please keep them in your thoughts.
  • Heidi Goldstein: donating $5 for every pound of her newest great-granddaughter who weighed in at 5 lbs 10 oz!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Heidi Goldstein’s thought, a “Recipe for Peace,” was dedicated to her new great-granddaughter as a wish for her:

1 cup of helping others
½ cup of compromise
2 cups of friendship
4 tablespoons of compliments
1 cup of cooperation
2 cups of love
¼ cup of self-esteem
2 tablespoons of kindness
2 tablespoons of caring
2 tablespoons of honesty

Mix it all together and use it often, because it is all you need for a lifetime of happiness—my wish for all of you.
