WELCOME & TRADITIONS

Geoff DunnHow about that snow storm, yeah? President Geoff Dunn — who, I’m told, had to trudge to school through the snow, with only rags on his feet, and yes, uphill both ways — declared that in all the winters he has spent in Buffalo, Oswego, and Ithaca he cannot remember when he last saw “this much snow for this duration.” And who said it doesn’t snow like it used to anymore?

As a break from his traditional 4-Way Test, President Geoff shared Lacy J. Dalton’s “We Are Rotary” on YouTube, with everyone singing along on the 4-Way Test chorus.

February is Black History Month, and Gary Ferguson selected four quotes from Frederick Douglass for his Thought for The Day:

  • “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”
  • “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”
  • “I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incu rring the ridicule of others rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.”
  • “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”

The Club welcomed Aly Evan’s guest, Priscilla Hummel (with baby Lila), Paul Martin’s daughter Alexa, who will be traveling to Spain as an exchange student on behalf of our Club, and Alanna Congdon. There were no visiting Rotarians.

It was the first meeting of the month, and after President Geoff read off the February birthdays, Mary Kane led us in singing “Happy Birthday.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

As of last week, Juliet Gibb’s Dozen Dinner Draw (DDD) thermometer had risen to 254 tickets sold. At that time there were only six days left to buy tickets. Now there is one day; the gala prize drawing is tomorrow!

As of Monday night, Juliet reported that just seven (7) tickets remained! The DDD team would like to finish processing the tickets by the end of today. If you want to buy one of the last tickets, please contact Ray Brisson at brisson.ray@gmail.com

The second of Gary Stewart’s “All Things Equal” interview with DDD beneficiary — Josiah Jacobus-Parker from Family & Children’s Services — was broadcast on WHCU last Tuesday. Listen to the recording here.

Dennis Gray and Dale Flinn have donated two raffle tickets as an incentive for reaching our sales goal! The first ticket was awarded to George Gull for selling the most tickets (as of last Wednesday), and the second ticket will go to the person who sells the most tickets between February 3rd and the drawing on February 10! You still have a few hours left!

Tomorrow, the Dozen Dinner Draw team will be organizing the gala prize drawing event, with President Geoff drawing the winning numbers. There are 13 prize packages, with the grand prize being 12 $100 gift certificates to local restaurants.

Jo-Ellen Hedlund referred to the previous Newsletter that included a link to the special district-wide meeting held January 27, “The Conversation Continues: Becoming Aware of Racism in our Lives.” The speaker was Carolyn Jones, whose talk was titled “Racism, Social Justice, and Rotary.” The recording of that discussion is available here on YouTube

President Geoff asked June Losurdo to bring out her MacKenzie-Childs Ice Bucket to collect Happy Dollars. To kick off, guest and recent presenter at our meeting Priscilla Hummel introduced WOW’s (Walking on Water) first show of the season! “Comfort Food,” is musical in three parts, by Rachel Lampert and Larry Pressgrove. It will be streaming online from February 12-21. Partnering restaurants for the show are Coltivare, Gola Osteria, Hawi Ethiopian Cuisine, and Moosewood. Visit WOW’s website for ticket information.

In other Happy Dollar news, Stamie Despo’s eldest son received a promising tech division job opportunity; Kelly Buck celebrated 7 years working with guest speaker; Linda Pasto was accepted as a vaccinator for CMC; Linda and Ray Brisson received their first vaccine dose in Binghamton; George Gull was happy “to not get any more snow;” and Nancy Potter gave thanks to George for being so diligent at selling tickets (40 total) and winning a DDD ticket.

Based on a report provided by Mary Berens and our Treasurer Jay O' Leary, Happy Dollar contributions from July through December 2020 were $3,265 pledged, and $3,207 received. President Geoff offered to cover the modest $46 shortfall. Thank you, Geoff! Well done members!

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Kelly Buck introduced Kim Thayer, Group Sales Manager at Greek Peak Mountain Resort. Kim has worked there in sales for the last 9 years and Kelly and Kim have worked together for seven years as members of the Finger Lakes Ski Club.

Current attractions open at Greek Peak Mountain Resort include Alpine skiing, Nordic (Cross Country) skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, snow tubing, guided zip line tours, mountain coaster rides, and water activities at the Cascade Pools. Kim has been encouraged with the start of this 2021 winter season, finding “an uptick in skiers returning,” along with the number of new skiers and families joining the resort's diverse outdoor activities, adding that people “are eager to be outdoors and return to some normalcy” during this time of COVID-19.

Careful attention to COVID-19 safety regulations continue to be implemented at Greek Peak. All employees and guests are required to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing. The number of people riding the lifts and those allowed into the base lodge are limited to 50% capacity. Additional food and beverage options have been added to include grab & go food at the base lodge, a new Fast Trax offering of a ski-in and ski-out food outlet at the A-frame lodge, and the addition of space heaters to the deck of Trax Pub & Grill.

Greek Peak offers diverse dining options. The new Carvers Steakhouse, located at the Hope Lake Lodge, has recently opened and is featured in the February 2021 What's Hot Magazine. Kevin McCarrick, formerly a chef of John Thomas Steakhouse, is one of the Executive Chefs. Trax Pub and Grill, located at the base of Greek Peak Mountain, offers casual inside dining or on a heated 6,000 square foot deck. Take-out and delivery are available.

Kelly noted that discounted lift tickets are available at Greek Peak Mountain Resort if you are a member of the Finger Lakes Ski Club. For more information on the ski club, check out their website at www.fingerlakesskiclub.com.
