WELCOME & TRADITIONS

Four-Way Test —
Thanks to Jo-Ellen Hedlund, Loralyn Light, Heidi Goldstein, and Walt Cottrell for reciting the Four-Way Test.

The Thought for the Day —
Thanks to Dale Flinn, who gave us three quotes:

  • “Achievement without fulfillment is the greatest failure possible.” — Tony Robbins
  • “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.” — Albert Einstein
  • “Seek to understand, then to be understood.” — Steven Covey

Guests and Visiting Rotarians —
Only our guest speaker.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Don’t forget to send in your Pancake Day money! Five tickets at $6 each = $30. Include a note if you want to donate your tickets for kids to use.
  • We return to Coltivare for hybrid meetings next week, Nov. 3! (A survey was sent out about your attendance.) One change from hybrid meetings last summer, when you aren’t eating or drinking, please stay masked.
You’ll need to show your proof of vaccination (if you haven’t already), but if you showed an Excelsior pass, you may need to update with Juliet Gibbs as the passes had various expiration dates.
  • World Polio Day was last Sunday, October 24. Last week our Foundation Chair Dale Flinn described it as a day when global health experts and partners share our progress on the road to polio eradication.
We only have two cases of polio, Dale said, one in Pakistan and one in Afghanistan. Dale also noted that Rotary has had connections with the Taliban, and after the fall of the Afghanistan government in mid-August, Rotary has been active in the country giving polio vaccines. We fund WHO and UNICEF and monitor their spending, Dale said.
November is Rotary Foundation month, so Dale will have more to say, soon!
  • The YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County will hold a free family Trunk or Treat event on Saturday, October 23rd, 4:30-8:30 PM.
  • Rotary Club of Whitney Point is planning its annual LobsterFest on November 6th, 5-7 PM. You may contact a member directly to purchase tickets, or email president@wprotary.org to order tickets.
  • Empire Multi-District Celebration Dinner this Friday, October 29: join Rotarians of Districts 7120, 7150, 7170, & 7190, with Rotary International President-Elect Jennifer Jones. All proceeds from this event will support the Rotary Polio Fund. (Registration closed October 25.)

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Chavon Bunch, Executive Director, Southside Community Center

“We have kept it in our mission to serve the youth, teaching a black-conscious curriculum guided by the 7 principles of Kwanzaa that focus on building and reinforcing family, community, and culture,” Chavon said. “We use our voices to express ourselves through movement, art, music, writing, and performance.”

Southside’s programs include an After School Program that is free for 2021-22, a Summer Camp, a Healthy Pet Clinic, Food Pantry, Recycle Ithaca’s Bikes (RIBS, 530 W. Buffalo St.), Unity Studio, and many others, along with major celebrations on Juneteenth, Kwanzaa, and Black History Month.
