Mary Kane; photo Mike BrownThe meeting was called to order by President Mary Kane, beginning with thanking all for their attendance, reminding us of the Four-Way Test, which was recited, and asking us if we have implemented it in our daily lives.

Today is National Freedom Day!  On February 1, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (originally written as the Emancipation Proclamation), outlawing slavery in our country.

Guests were introduced:
  • Juliia Karpyshyn and Leonid Onyshchuk, both from Lviv, Ukraine, guests of Bill Highland
  • Rod Noel from Corning, guest of Frank Towner
  • Terry McIver from Ithaca
  • Shirley Way, our speaker for next week, guest of Bill Highland
  • And visiting Rotarian Conrad Janke from the Cortland Breakfast Club

The Thought for the Day was delivered by Scott Whitham.  He read a lengthy poem by a Ukrainian poet.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ambra Munlyn; photo Mike BrownFrank Towner introduced new member Ambra Munlyn.  Ambra is an IC grad who decided to stay in the area.  She is currently employed by the Tomkins County Health Department and works with Ted Schiele.  She is responsible for the Tobacco Free Tompkins program.

Last week’s meeting was snowed out.

Our Ukraine Concert will be taking place on February 19th.  Sign up sheets were on the table, or reach out to Sherrie Negrea to volunteer.  Help is needed for set up, ushering, help with the art auction, and to provide refreshments.

Emma, our exchange student from Italy, will be selling citrus for hurricane relief through the Lehman Alternative Community School.  The students will be traveling to help with hurricane rebuilding in New Orleans.

Gertrude Noden sent a note from South Sudan, thanking the club for our support.

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) will be held, participation is encouraged.

Save the date:  Mary-Lynn Cummings and Bob Gravani have announced that the Spring Highway cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 22nd (Earth Day) from 9 to 11 AM; meet at the Tops parking lot.  More details to come later!

Geoff Dunn recognized Rotary anniversaries (he was actually the only one present who was being recognized!), and the club sang Happy Birthday to Rotarians celebrating in February—with Siu-Ling at the piano!

Steve Johnson presented a PHF+7 recognition to Harlin McEwen!  Harlin has had a distinguished career in law enforcement and has been a member of Rotary since 1972.  He became a PHF in 1996, which was supported by a donation from Beverly Baker.  And he has given consistently since.

LAST WEEK’S PRESENTATION

Bill Highland introduced our speaker:  Cornell Professor Emeritus John H. Weiss.  He has studied war, peace, and the prevention of conflict.  His talk was titled, “The Russian Invasion of Ukraine: A Humanitarian View.”  The professor helpfully provided an outline of his presentation, covering the following points:
  1. John Weiss; photo Mike BrownGenocide
  2. Confidence—five reasons why the Ukrainians will win:  dignity, army, motivation, unity, narrative
  3. Doubt—why victory will be a long time coming.  No immediate spring offensive (due to mud); the kesselschlacht can work; combined arms may be the only way; the fighter plane issue; difficulties of deep logistics; the drone unknown and the vagaries of tank warfare; hypermissiles; the mysterious components of identity (Donetsk, Crimea, and the Republika Srpska); segmentation, privatization, and resignation in Russian political culture; the lost Ukrainians (reversing filtration of 1.54 million people, 8000+ children without parents); the structure of reconstruction (concentration, competition, corruption, and the challenges of laws and regulations); handicaps of the refugee student; militarization; the necessity of negotiation; meaning of non-compliance in the START treaty.
  4. Supporting Ukrainians:  Together for Ukraine Foundation, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization formed in direct response to the urgent and growing need for medical and humanitarian aid in regions of Ukraine affected by war (P.O. Box 72, Binghamton, NY  13902).

HAPPY DOLLARS

Happy Dollars were offered in support of our Community Grants program:
  • Jack Roscoe: $10 for the Savage Club that is holding a Valentine’s Day concert after three years off!  And $2 for Tony Pesco who will be singing Nessun dorma.
  • Mary Berens; photo Mike BrownMary Berens: $10, delivered a PSA for CPR; there is an AED at St. Catherine’s in the Parish Center, if needed!  Also, Mary was sent a link for five Ithaca Journal articles from 1926 when our club created the “Ithaca Rotary Mile,” a beautification project.
  • Dale Flinn: $20, for Jim Johnston and Barb Romano sharing a birthday in February; Pancake Day folks seem to have birthdays that are close to each other!  And Dale’s dad’s birthday is on Feb 4 when he would have turned 90.
  • Jeremiah Craig:  $1, enjoying the weather, and is offering manual labor to anyone who needs it!
  • Loralyn Light:  $5, to welcome to Jim Johnston to the meeting!  L2 used to be called the “head chick” when working the Chicken BBQ with Jim and others for 13 years.  Loralyn is leaving for three months, with her husband and her cat, where they’ll be volunteering for five weeks in Sanford, FL, as well as traveling in the south.
  • Gary Reinbolt; photo Mike BrownJessica Verfuss: $10, for her 17-year-old son who just graduated from Cortlandville firefighter boot camp—and has just put out his first real fire!
  • Gary Reinbolt: $5, it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood!
  • Heidi Goldstein: $5 to announce the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) which has been her passion for 15 years; if you want more information, please talk to her or Dale Flinn!
Mary Kane had the pleasure of the last word, and that is we are adjourned!
