WELCOME & TRADITIONS

President Geoff Dunn launched his penultimate meeting at the anchor’s desk, giving updates on the storm that blew through, damaging Stewart Park and turning a very warm day over to a day chilly enough to call for a jacket.

The Four-Way Test was given with aplomb by Jack Rosco, Dennis Gray, Joanne Lamoureux, and Beverly Baker.

For his Thought for The Day, Dale Johnson talked about the summer solstice. He offered a couple of poems, the first, A Summer Invocation, by Walt Whitman and the second, Starry Nights, from Carl Sandberg.

One guest was introduced, one-time Rotarian John Gaines. Thank you for joining us, John!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

It has been said that the best part of a Rotary President’s year is when they announce their choice for Rotarian of the Year. President Geoff reminded us of those who have been so honored, and then … the envelope, please! In recognition of her tireless work as a volunteer and community advocate, Geoff named Linda Pasto as Rotarian of the Year, 2020-2021. Geoff pointed to the prominent position Linda has taken with Days for Girls, and with the Lansing Lunchbox program that was supported by a month of the DoGoodery Raffle. Congratulations Linda! So well deserved!

But wait! There’s more! In the spirit of “bet you can’t pick just one,” Geoff included Honorable Mentions for Juliet Gibbs, who reimagined the DDD for this year and served as the glue that kept thing all together, and the Captains McNeil, Stacey and Shaun, who faced a very challenging year at the Salvation Army, and incorporated Rotarian volunteers in food pantry and meal delivery.

Lastly, Geoff recognized Jessica Gosa, Executive Director of Foodnet Meals on Wheels, and the current Chamber of Commerce Hero of the Month, for her work to ensure food security for a broad spectrum of community members, including involvement with Rotarians. Sad to say, Jessica will be leaving the area, and therefore this Club. Thank you Jessica, for all you have brought to our community and to our Club. Your presence and your smile will be greatly missed!

Congratulations and many thanks to Linda, Juliet, Stacey, Shaun, and Jessica. You do us all proud!

In other announcements:

President Geoff sent out an email with the specifics of our return to in person meetings at Coltivare on July 7. The full text is reprinted at the end of this newsletter. The meetings will be hybrid, allowing attendance in person or by Zoom. Anyone wishing to attend in person must be vaccinated. Thanks to Trina VanAtta, Jack Roscoe, Ron Provus, Richard Sholtys, and Joe Giordano for their involvement in the committee work.

Rotary Clubs in Trumansburg and Groton are hosting Golf Tournaments in July. Contact President Geoff for details.

Eighth annual Rotary Road Rally is August 8th.

Millie Clarke Maynard talked about The James L Gibbs scholarship, which was awarded last week to IHS student, Autumn Niver. Autumn is well known to Stacey MacNeil through her work with the Salvation Army.

PP Mary Berens announced that Ken Horst has died. A longtime Rotarian, Ken has been an Honorary Member for several years.

And, in Happy Dollars:

  • Jack Rosco gave for a Savage Club performance.
  • Loretta Goss gave $21 for the class of 2021; her oldest granddaughter is graduating from High School!
  • Mary Kane: $14 for 14 days in Ocean Park, Maine, and $25 in honor of Jessica Gosa.
  • Ron Provus announced the Country Club is now public. On July 2 they are having fireworks; bring your own lawn chairs; food will be available.
  • Joanne Lamoureux put in $40 for a 40th wedding anniversary.
  • Nancy Potter had $10 for George Gull’s recovery from anaplasmosis, and another $10 for all of our honorees.
  • Dale Flinn gave $20 for spending real time with real people including fellow Rotarians.
  • Linda Brisson followed with $25 for the joy of spending real time with Rotarian friends.
  • Heidi Goldstein put in $5 for a G16 (grandmothers of 16 children) gathering.
  • Gail Lyman contributed $21 for TST BOCES Student of the year, Ivy Card! And another $21 for Gibbs winner Autumn Niver.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Aly Evans introduced Myer Farm Distillers. The speaker, Joe Myer, is making MASH, which is time sensitive, so he had to miss today’s meeting and instead sent his presentation in a video. The first video was screened at the meeting, and a second video was sent in an email. Both links are below.

Joe’s family has been in Ovid since 1868, and they are now organic farmers. The Distillery has been open to the public for six years, and their motto is “Spirits From Field to Flask.”

Here are the two videos. The first is a short video highlighting Myer Farm Distillers. This is the one that was shown during the meeting. Click here to view it.

The second, longer video is from Distillery owner Joe Myer. The first 10 minutes or so details the challenges faced during the pandemic. Click here to view the second video.

The website is www.Myerfarmdistillers.com.

Thank you again to Aly Evans and Mike Katz for this month's series of programs on the Finger Lakes Craft Beverage Industry!

Rotary Club of Ithaca Hybrid Meeting Plan

Hello Ithatarian!

Thanks to the hard work of a small group of club members and Coltivare’s Jason Sidle, we are now able to offer a hybrid approach to our weekly lunchtime meetings, effective July 7th.

Throughout the process, the overriding concern was to resume in-person meetings safely, while retaining the zoom presence at our meetings for those uncomfortable with attending in-person or who have not yet been vaccinated.

We will require all attendees be vaccinated and provide proof. We will ask all Rotarians to present proof via e-mail or at the door the first time they attend an in-person meeting. A master list will be generated weekly of the verified vaccination status of the entire club.

You may contact Juliet Gibbs in advance of the meeting with a copy of your vaccination record. If you don't provide it in advance of the meeting, you MUST bring it with you – or show the NYS Excelsior Pass on your phone -- the first time you attend in-person. Proof of vaccination only needs to be provided once. Juliet’s contact information is jkg46@cornell.edu. You may also text an image of your vaccination card to Juliet at (978) 430-7818.

There will be one Rotary volunteer who will welcome people at the door, check their vaccination status and give out their name tag. Guests will present proof of vaccination status and be given a temporary tag. Color coded dots will be available to affix to the name tag to indicate each person’s comfort level with contact:

  • Red = No contact, no exceptions
  • Yellow = Elbow bumps only
  • Green = Hugs welcomed

Since we will be checking for proof of vaccination, masks do not need to be worn at the meeting unless you choose to do so. All Coltivare staff members have been vaccinated and will wear masks.

After receiving their name tag, members and guests will pay at the bar and pick up a meal ticket. Rotary will have a cash taker at the bar and Coltivare will have a staff person to take credit cards.

A Rotary greeter will still be at the door to the meeting room. Even though attendance may be small at the outset, the entire meeting room will be available. Tables will be set up for 6 people.

The meal will be buffet style. Coltivare does not have the staff at this time to serve the buffet and for safety reasons we cannot allow self-service from hot pans. The first few weeks of meals will be cold sandwiches and perhaps pizza. Drinks and desserts will be self-serve as in the past.

Club members Rich Sholtys and Brett Bossard are setting us up for a zoom presence at the meeting. There will be a laptop running zoom, a camera on a tripod to focus on the speaker or presentation, and a wireless microphone connected to the zoom laptop. The zoom screen will be projected onto the wall. To be heard and seen on zoom, all attendees at Coltivare will need to come to the podium to speak. This would include Happy Dollars. There will be a Rotary zoom assistant at each meeting running one of the laptops and helping those on zoom with communicating their questions and/or announcements.

Again, if members, guests and speakers cannot show proof of being vaccinated they cannot enter the meeting and instead can be present through zoom.

Finally, Jason at Coltivare needs to know how many people he can expect in person so he can set up the appropriate number of tables and prepare enough food given his limited staff.

Please respond ASAP to a Doodle Poll survey you will receive Wednesday evening via Clubrunner asking how you plan to attend the July 7th Rotary meeting, and how often you plan to attend meetings either in-person or virtually through the remainder of the summer.

I want to specifically thank President-elect Trina VanAtta and club members Jack Roscoe, Ron Provus, Rich Sholtys, Brett Bossard, Brad Carruth and Joe Giordano for getting us to this point. It has been a long 15 months, but through it all we have managed to stay together, welcome a few new members….and most importantly, serve our community and the world!

President Geoff
