Jason Sidle; photo Mike BrownPresident Mary Kane called the meeting to order, followed by the Four-Way Test.

And speaking of being beneficial to all concerned, Mary (re)introduced Jason Sidle, the Director of Operations for Coltivare, who shared a word of thanks, along with offering the support of the facility.

Our guests included:
  • Brandi Remington, TST-BOCES, guest of Angela Sullivan and our speaker
  • Gail Smith, Community Coalition for Healthy Youth
  • Callyn Patilla, Tompkins Community Bank, guest of President Mary and Frank Towner

President Mary and Jack Roscoe led the room in singing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.

Warren Allmon; photo Mike BrownTHOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Warren Allmon announced that “The Earth is on Fire,” with temperatures not seen in between 300,000 and 3 million years.  Often we are hampered from taking action because of our perceptions of what others are thinking.

The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication has some interesting data.  In short, the number of Americans that support climate policy outnumber those who don’t by a factor of 2:1, but most Americans believe the opposite to be true, which prevents action!

LAST WEEK’S PRESENTATION

Angela Sullivan introduced Brandi Remington, the Youth Development Coordinator for BOCES who shared her presentation about the BOCES Youth Survey Results.

Brandi Remington; photo Mike BrownThis survey has evolved from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, but we are now using the CLYDE survey that measures risk and protective factors.  There is a dashboard available online to allow anyone to see this data for 2021, which includes 3488 valid responses for students in grades 7–12.  See https://clyde.catalyst-insight.com/public/dashboard/tompkins_ny.

There are 40 developmental assets—20 internal and 20 external that, if available, greatly improve young persons’ chances of avoiding potentially harmful behaviors and mental health issues.

Some interesting points include:
  • Why do students use substances?  Four reasons:  to Feel Good, Feel Better, Do Better, and Curiosity and social pressure (usually the first 3 by far).
  • For past 30 days, Tompkins County shows alcohol use (14%), pot (10%), and vaping (9%)—lower than the national average (pre-2021 data).
  • There’s a high level of self-reporting on mental health measures, which are increasing from 2014–2021—around a 25% increase.  This could be an actual increase and/or because there is more open talk about mental health and new vocabulary to reference “anxiety”
  • Only 43% of youth said they have an adult who they can trust to help with problems.
  • 30-day use of pot has not increased dramatically since 2012, but with the first dispensary opening in Ithaca, this is expected to increase, partially because of the reduced perception of risk.
  • Pot is higher in THC now, up from 1-3 % in the 1970s to up to 23% now!
  • There is a danger of edibles in fancy packaging that make people believe there is oversight.  Packages are purchased on Amazon and filled in people’s basements!
  • Fentanyl has been found in edible products in Tompkins County and is very dangerous.
There is one cannabis dispensary opening in Ithaca the week of this meeting.  If you see illegal dispensing of cannabis, you can report it online at https://cannabis.ny.gov/report-an-incident
