WELCOME & TRADITIONS

Vice President Catrina VanAtta was at the helm last week in President Geoff Dunn’s absence, and right off she made reference to Geoff’s “soothing voice;” she grew up listening to him on the radio! What a wonderful image, and tribute to Geoff’s place in this community!

Trina asked George Ferrari, Joe Giordano, Ann Coyne, and June Losurdo to recite the Four-Way Test.

Josephine Allen gave the Thought for the Day, pulled from Maya Angelou’s book of poems “I Shall Not Be Moved.” She read the poem “Human Family.”

Guests were introduced. There were no visiting Rotarians.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Frank Towner introduced Gordy Crittenden and Liz Klohmann of the Ithaca Youth Bureau, who gave an update on our Club’s support of the youth soccer program last year during COVID. Ithaca Rotary Club has sponsored youth soccer for 21 years! Usually our sponsorship is at the $2,000 level, but during COVID it was notched down to $1,000: $463 in scholarships for students, with the balance going to equipment and background checks for coaches. Gordy and Liz emphasized IYB’s gratitude for our club’s support, and hope it will rebound to the former $2,000 level this year.

As with just about everything, COVID made 2020 a challenging year for the Youth Bureau. However, IYB worked out “how to do” youth soccer within the constraints of COVID by forming co-ed pods of K-8 grade students who played together. All tolled, there were 14 pods with 165 players (down from the usual 700 or so), plus 16 coaches and 15 volunteers. The volunteers consisted mainly of the Ithaca College women’s soccer team, whose season wasn’t due to Covid. They did a wonderful job of assisting the coaches and students, and teaching drills and skills.

Gail Lyman announced that the Club scholarship committee has selected our 37th annual James L. Gibbs Scholar, which is given every year to an Ithaca High School senior who exemplifies international and interracial understanding. The committee received 80 applications (!) and narrowed it down to the top 3 finalists. The final selection was unanimous and cannot be revealed until Ithaca High School makes its official announcement on June 19. Stay tuned! Gail thanked the committee for their exhaustive work.

VP Trina reported that Jason Seidel, our amazing go-to guy at Coltivare, received the TC3 Distinguished Alumni Award at their graduation ceremony the previous weekend. Congrats to Jason!

After 10 minutes of table talk in breakout rooms, Happy Dollars were collected. Members were happy for the Gibbs Scholarship, and especially for the light starting to shine at the end of the long pandemic winter: seeing friends and family, being able to hug and shake hands again, and a veritable bouquet of personal blooms and buds we’re all experiencing for what feels like the first time in forever!

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Bill Murphy introduced the meeting’s speaker, his colleague at Tompkins Trust Co. (now Tompkins Financial) Tamer Elshourbagy. Tamer is a senior wealth manager and financial advisor.

Tamer gave an overview of the global financial markets, adding that 2020 was a remarkable year for the U.S. stock markets. We experienced a 34% dip at the start of COVID in April 2020, he said, and now just over a year later, we’ve seen an 84% increase from that low, and we are poised for continued strong growth. Services and the global economy are rebounding, and this should continue into 2022, in part thanks to the vaccine rollout. Tamer also pointed out that difference between developed markets and third world economies is notable.

The first quarter of 2021 marked the highest spending ever in market history. There is a robust demand for goods and low supply chain inventories. Labor is in high demand. All of this translates to increased profitability down the road.
